Fishing vessel DAKOTA was built from an original design, which was a pioneer of the whaleback style. Tragically, in 1947 John Berg was drowned in a freak accident while on vacation at home in Blaine, and Eythor Westman bought out his share of the Dakota. DAKOTA is made of wood and is 71 feet in length. It is a multiple gear purse-seiner/trawler and was one of the first vessels to break into the commercial bottom fishing along the North Vancouver Island Coast and Hecate Straits. Later it was one of the first vessels to fish for shrimp in Alaskan waters.This fine example of a Pacific Northwest fishing vessel represents the fishing fleet and exemplifies the pride, aspirations and abilities of the designers, builders and crews.
